Hatcher, Hayes & Geci

Works featuring Jason Hatcher, John Geci & Michael Hayes

You wont find a better way to Spring into a High Country Summer than The Art Cellar’s first exhibition of our 2023 Summer Show Schedule!

Jason Hatcher

We are starting this season off with a riot of color. Jason Hatcher utilizes complex contemporary palettes to convey emotion and expression in his abstract works on panel & paper. His implementation of aesemic writing leaves room for the viewer to ponder the mystery behind each piece for themselves. With a background in professional photography, Jason has been involved in the creative world for a long time. His experience is apparent through his control of composition & proportions. This shift in medium has fostered a budding artistic career with uncapped potential.

Perfectly complimenting Jason Hatcher’s vibrant abstractions are two featured glass artists, Michael Hayes & John Geci who love to play in the world of color and texture. Both local to the High Country and hailing from Penland School of Crafts, they are among the most exciting glass blowers in the state!

Michael Hayes

For Michael, pattern isn’t just a theme in his art, but more a guiding force in life.

“My work is about finding a fluidity in pattern. My daily life — my routine, repetition of body movements, patterns in my thoughts — influence the final design of my pieces”

An intricate creative process that starts with a simple cane pull and evolves into complex designs, Michael’s work is a reflection of himself. His glass journey started in 2001 at Washington University in St. Louis before taking a single lesson in glass blowing. There, a book about Venetian glass patterns inspired Michael to pursue this creative journey. To this day, Michael remains fascinated with mesmerizing pattern, which is seen through traditional Italian and Swedish techniques.

John Geci

John Geci’s approach to glass blowing is a story of empathy. He equates his creative process to the very glass he works with. Often described as a frozen super-cooled liquid, Geci prefers to think of glass as “static motion.”

“Working with glass is an all encompassing process. It requires precise timing, subtle understanding of the materials, tools, furnaces, and spaces around them. Each piece I make captures my focused time and thought.”

With a deep admiration and respect for the material he works with, John’s art is inspired from the molten, organic state of glass. Through this, his pieces “highlight the material’s transparency, fluidity, and potential for brilliant coloration.”

“With my work I try to have each form serve as a canvas to display the inherent beauty and simple elegance of the glass.”
